Pine froms with holly-right

Our trip to the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, and Hungary to see the cities of Prague, Regensburg, Passau, Vienna, and Budapest was a great experience.  From sunny weather in Prague was nice, but the cold damp weather in the other places we visited was expected.  The historical buildings are always a fascination, and the Christmas markets added a feeling of excitement.  Below are the best parts of each port of call.

Prague

A disorganized morning and a missed excursion left us with an unexpected day on our own in Prague. It turned out to be one of the best days of the trip, full of easy wandering, warm lights, and a city we love. Scenes from our day in Prague include views near the Charles Bridge and moments from the small neighborhood Christmas markets just a couple of blocks from our hotel.

Regensburg

We were back in Regensburg for the third time, a town we’ve always appreciated for its history and easy walkability. We spent the afternoon wandering the narrow cobblestone streets, taking another look at the Stone Bridge—still standing strong after eight centuries—and enjoying the Christmas market. The familiar mix of architecture, river views, and holiday touches made the visit feel both comfortable and festive.

Passau

We enjoyed our morning visit to the Christmas market and St. Stephen’s Cathedral, but the afternoon turned out to be one of the unexpected highlights of the trip. We set out simply to walk, following the paths along the Danube, around the point where the rivers meet, and back along the Inn. The changing scenery, the narrow steep streets, and the interesting shops we passed on our way back to the ship all added up to a memorable afternoon.

Wachau Valley

Even on a foggy morning, the Wachau Valley was interesting to watch unfold. The river carried us past small towns and villages, beautiful churches, castle ruins, and vineyards that climbed the hillsides.  Nothing was dramatic, it peaceful and easy to enjoy.

Kerms

Our ship dropped us off in Krems for the visit to Göttweig Abbey, an interesting place to see. The guest quarters and church were ornate and impressive, while the chapel offered a quieter, simpler kind of beauty. We met the ship again in Tulln and continued up the Danube.

Vienna

Our day on our own in Vienna was one of the highlights of the trip. The subway, the Christmas market, and the Ferris wheel all added up to a great day.

Budapest

The Christmas market in Budapest was vibrant and energetic with a festive feel, and the lights along the Danube were incredible.
