Rocky Point Resort

Petersburg, Alaska

Our fourth trip to Rocky Point Resort, situated near Petersburg, Alaska, was once again unforgettable. We delighted in fishing, exquisite cuisine, and stunning landscapes.

After spending an evening in Seattle, we set off on a flight to Petersburg. During our layover in Juneau, we were delighted to find a Disney Toontown-themed plane ready for boarding. This plane was significantly larger than the usual small cargo-passenger aircraft we were accustomed to. As we taxied to the runway, we caught sight of the stunning Mendenhall Glacier. The flight itself was a joy, affording us spectacular views of the snow-capped mountains and glaciers below, as we cruised at a low altitude on the short 30-minute trip to Petersburg.

Trips to Petersburg are always a delight, and our latest visit was no exception. The vast number of boats in the harbors and the dramatic difference between the high and low tides is always interesting. Although the weather was warm for Petersburg, it was a refreshing break from the intense heat of Texas. The sunny days enhanced made our visit to the quaint cannery town a delight.

Rocky Point Resort, nestled a stone's throw (or a 20-mile trek) from Petersburg, was our final destination. The lodgings were spacious and comfy, though they didn't scream luxury. The views? A front-row seat to Wrangle Narrows' splendor from the porch, and a rainforest extravaganza from the back.  It was a nice place to spend a few days.

We reached the lodge just in time for a delightful lunch. After settling in our cabin, we headed out on a brief fishing excursion in a skiff provided by the lodge. The weather appeared mild at the dock, yet the wind from the snow-capped mountains was brisk on the water. Our luck was scant, yielding only a sculpin. It might have served as bait for halibut had time permitted, but dinner at the lodge couldn't be missed.  We barely made it back in time.

Day2 (3)
Lunch at Rocky Point

The next three days were spent fishing with a guide. As luck would have it, the sunny skies took a break, leaving us to fish under a blanket of clouds and some pouring rain. The fish weren't exactly jumping into our boat, but we managed to catch enough to take home more than we needed. Despite the soggy conditions, the views were stunning, and spotting local wildlife never gets old.

Day 3
Scenery and Wildlife

The first photo below is an island close to our fishing area.  The second is an eagle that was spotted in the bushes on the right side of the island.

There were rainbows.

We saw a whale in the distance, a sealion looking for a handout, and a sea otter enjoying his lunch.

We saw interesting cabins on our way back to the lodge where a delicious meal was always waiting.

Our time at Rocky Point was wonderful, but it was time to go home. The short walk in the rain to the dining room our last morning was invigorating, though it left us a bit damp.  After enjoying a delightful breakfast against the backdrop of a breathtaking view, our luggage and fish were loaded into the Rocky Point van for our trip to the airport for our flight to Seattle.

Petersburg Airport

The tiny Petersburg airport offers full features within a single room. Check-in is located to the right, where agents manually inspect all checked luggage. There is one gate where carry-ons undergo scanning, similar to larger airports.

Day6 (3)

Arriving luggage can be collected at a window immediately to the left of security. Although there are only two flights per day, the facility experiences a flurry of activity with each arrival.

We enjoyed a nice evening in Seattle and were on our plane heading home before noon. As we departed, we were treated to a rare view: Mount Rainier in all its splendor. It was a beautiful ending to our journey.
